John Wooden Versus Ben Franklin for President
A WebQuest for Grades 9 through 12,
By Dan Baker

Introduction:
You and your team members are on the Star Trek Enterprise. Somehow, John Wooden has been taken back in time and is running for President of the United States. In order to get John back to the 21st Century you must become a campaign manager and make sure that John Wooden gets elected. In this time space anomaly Ben Franklin is your opponent.
Task
You are forced to use the technology that is current for the Colonial Period. Create a four week plan for John including places to speak, travel arrangements, and speeches. Find three important people who will support him.
He must speak in three major cities, and meet three major supporters. Describe these meetings including the setting, dialogue, travel arrangements and a dialogue with one commoner (stagecoach driver, waiter, farmer, teacher, sailor, etc)
You also must pick a running mate. In other words, choose a vice president who will become the real president when John is beamed up to the Enterprise
You may use 21st century technology to describe this including PowerPoint, web pages, outlines, drawings, flash program (Firestarter), and Hot Potatoes quiz maker.
Create a poster, or newspaper article supporting this person.
Finally, you must have John debate Ben Franklin. In this debate include a moderator, and newspaper reporters. Make sure that John wins this important debate! John can appeal to the values of the colonists, and can make up to three promises he will keep if elected. Make sure he answers the newspaper reporters’ questions including why he believes he should be president. Although no one at that time has ever heard of John Wooden, his charm and wisdom wins them over. Include his Steps to Success and anything about his past or upbringing that would help him win.
After he wins and John is beamed up to the Enterprise, describe how John feels now that he is back in the 21st Century. Include what John missed the most and questions your team members have for him.
Process
Within your group of six persons, decide what part of this quest each person will be responsible for. For example, a group member may want to work on the traveling John will take, the people he meets, the speech he gives, or the answers he gives to the reporters etc. You may want to divide the work up by those who want to provide visuals, or sounds, or you may want to act out the story as a play. There is plenty of room for everyone to use the gifts that are unique to them.
All members must keep a daily log of the work they do. Any changes to the requirements of this quest must be teacher approved. For example your group may want to specialize on just one aspect of this task. That is permissible as long as all members and the teacher agree. Remember, not everything is written in stone. You may brainstorm or change your quest as needed. Just make sure that all members agree and the team has teacher approval.
